Better Hearing & Speech Month: An Emphasis on the “Better”

Each May, Better Hearing and Speech Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication and swallowing disorders and the role clinicians play in providing life altering treatment for these conditions.

As an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, I was frequently asked by my friends “What’s your major” and “What will you actually be able to do with it”?  Many times, their only point of reference was a therapist who worked with children having difficulty saying their “r’s”.  I was quick to explain that the role of a speech language pathologist can be complex and diverse. Some clinicians might choose to be a generalist, another a specialist, work in a hospital, clinic or schools with children and/or adults.  Appreciating that most people’s joy comes from talking and eating, I shared that if, as a speech language pathologist, I could help individuals with a disease or swallowing disorder regain joy that that would represent a pretty amazing experience.

Reflecting on the meaning of BHSM, I realized the word “better” was a recurrent theme in the development of Nutraphagia and our EAT Snack.  Through my years of clinical experience, I would often say “there has to be a better way” when it came to providing patients with a dignified delicious snack. Our goal is to develop a better option for those who required high calories and easy mastication. Most of all we want to make someone’s day better as they struggled with their particular difficulty.

To all of the patients and families that we are privileged to serve, our company will continue to strive to be better for you!
